Lourens Nursery’s humble beginnings make their current opportunities all the more remarkable. With the expansion of Lourens Nursery as a landscaping organization, many opportunities have arisen. Among these is the chance to employ struggling, unemployed community members. These individuals are appointed as community workers, meaning they reside in the surrounding area of a given project and are hired to work there temporarily.
A number of Lourens Nursery’s permanent employees started as community workers. Due to their dedication and hard work, they were permanently hired and granted raises. They have gained job stability, had the opportunity to advance within the organization, and received fair wages.
Community workers do not need prior experience or specific skills to be hired. They receive training in landscaping, gardening, garden maintenance, and irrigation. They are equipped with all the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their jobs effectively.
Themba Nkosi began as a temporary community worker at a project in Centurion, known as Apartments on Jordan. He is now a permanent employee at Lourens Nursery and earns enough to support his wife and children. Since building himself up within Lourens Nursery, he has even moved into a new residence.

The most recent community hires are for a project in Linbro Park, Edenvale, where 10 community members have been employed. Kabelo Mcobe expressed that he had been unemployed for a long time, and thanks to Mr. Lourens, he can now afford his rent and other expenses more easily.

Sinoyolo Mpanana expressed her gratitude for finally being able to help her husband with their monthly expenses. She is a dedicated worker who always gives her best to complete the tasks at hand. She hopes to secure a permanent position once the current project is finished.
Nomthetho Mzwakali, another woman who was hired, stated that although the work is demanding, it is also rewarding. Both women have faced numerous rejections in their efforts to find employment. Lourens Nursery took a chance on them, and now Nomthetho is the first to arrive at work every day. They mentioned that there are indeed men who treat them as inferior, but through their hard work, they have earned respect from many people at Linbro Park.

These individuals earn a fair and honest income. They also enjoy benefits such as transportation to and from work, safety boots, work uniforms, and a Lourens Nursery T-shirt with their names on it.
It’s remarkable to think that 22 years of hard work can currently improve so many lives. These community hires are building communities, enhancing lives, and contributing to South Africa’s economic growth.
