Bishop Bavin School was initially established as the St. George’s Home for Boys in 1915. It functioned as a school until 2020 when it closed its doors because of large amounts of debt (R36 million). The Angelican Church of Southern Africa holds this 32 acres property in trust and has refused to sell even under pressing circumstances in the past.
It is currently being revamped to function as a private school in the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg. With over 110 years of heritage and history, it is a great honour for Lourens Nursery to be working on the Bishop Bavin project. Lourens Nursery, amongst other companies, is working together to breathe new air into this magnificent heritage site.
Marius Lourens, with his 25 years of landscaping experience, is leading his team in this project. They will ensure sustainable landscaping solutions, the restoration of existing gardens, and creating an environment that aligns with the school’s educational philosophy.
The Bishop Bavin project is not merely a physical transformation, it also fuels South Africa’s youth. It preserves South Africa’s heritage and empowers future generations. The combined efforts of the Angelican Church of South Africa, Lourens Nursery, Ndwala Contruction and others, reflect a clear vision of creating a learning environment in the heart of Johannesburg.
The school is holding its open day on 30 May 2025. Teams will be working relentlessly to ensure everything is said and done by that Friday. As the project progresses, the community can look forward to a revitalized, yet preserved Bishop Bavin that will serve as a beacon of educational excellence.
